An Association of Congregations
Unitarian Universalist congregations are self-governed. There is no denominational hierarchy that dictates the direction of the congregation. The over 1000 Unitarian Universalist congregations and covenanting communities are joined together in a formal association of equal, though separate entities.
What this means is that each congregation develops its own mission, vision, and purpose for existing; searches for and calls a minister of their choosing to serve the congregation; decides how to govern itself; elects leaders from within the congregation; and each congregation holds the members accountable to the promises they make to each other.
In order to do all of this, each congregation raises funds to pay for the programs and ministries of the congregation, including staff and operating expenses.
