Welcoming Congregation
In 1987 the Unitarian Universalist Association established the Common Vision Planning Committee which found many negative attitudes, deep prejudices, and profound ignorance about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning people (LGBTQ+), many of whom were excluded from their congregations. In response, the “Welcoming Congregation Program” was established to become more inclusive towards LGBTQ+ people in our congregations and communities. The goal of the workshop series is to reduce prejudice by increasing understanding and acceptance among people of different sexual orientations and gender identities.
"The Welcoming Congregation Program provides an excellent checklist for recognizing structural and individual homophobia and transphobia—perhaps the most deeply rooted prejudices in our society. It addresses the mystery of sexuality and gender and demands honesty about ourselves that we may not be willing or able to maintain.”
By participating in the Welcoming Congregation Program in 2009, Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church was officially designated as a Welcoming Congregation by the Unitarian Universalist Association.
We are a "Welcoming Congregation," inviting people of diverse sexual orientations and genders to become a part of the Shoreline UU religious community.
